Meanwhile, the lawn of the Massac County Courthouse became a viewing area as visitors watched the moon take its place over the sun. Street lights came on as totality grew near. Approximately 2,500 were gathered in downtown Metropolis around the Superman Statue as the Metropolis Chamber of Commerce hosted its “Where Heroes Seek the Sun†event in conjunction with the Great North American Eclipse. Other locations around Metropolis — including Fort Massac State Park, Dorothy Miller Park, Harrah's Casino parking lot and the Metropolis rest area — were filled with visitors taking in the historic event.
